At Waldorf schools around the world performing the story of St. George and the The Dragon is an annual tradition. At our school Classes One, Two, Three and Four form the main cast with Class Eight being The Dragon. Kindergartens, the other classes and parents are the audience.
When Hair One was in his second year of Kindergarten I went up with my then 5 year old Hair Two to see the play. Hair Two was really enjoying the play and all was well until he saw The Dragon. He was convinced The Dragon was real! I had to take him off behind the main building until the play finished. Later he saw the Dragon’s ‘skin’ laying on the ground and got even more upset. No amount of explanation would console him.
For week’s afterwards I had to park on the school driveway instead of in the parking lot because Hair Two would not go up to the school in case the Dragon was home. When the snow flew we managed to convince him that dragons hibernate and regular service to the parking lot resumed. The following year as a young kindergartener himself he bravely sat through the whole play…. though not without some trepidation.
This year Hair Two was the Head of the Dragon!
